Behind the Makeup with Joey Maalouf
This Fashon’s Night Out we were thrilled to work with celebrity makeup artist Joey Maalouf from the hit Bravo TV show The Rachel Zoe Project. Joey, a total airbrush addict, maned the front window at Sephora 34th Street airbrushing models and fans to flawless perfection. In the midst of all the FNO fun we were able to grab him for a few minutes so we could go behind the makeup with Joey Maalouf.
TEMPTU: Who inspired you to become a makeup artist?
JM: My brother Elie.
TEMPTU: What was your first memorable work as an artist?
JM: I was 15 I did my cousins makeup for fun and became obsessed.
TEMPTU: What is your signature style?
JM: I love Glamour, Seductive eyes and a full impact lip. Like a woman who would wear all her diamonds in the daytime.
TEMPTU: What are your creative influences?
JM: Fashion, Old Hollywood movies, Confident women, Change.
TEMPTU: What are your favorite TEMPTU products?
JM: The foundations are perfect. They look and feel like nothing is on your skin.
TEMPTU: What is your most important makeup tool?
JM: My hands. With them I can make anyone look good even using mud.
TEMPTU: What is a past makeup/fashion trend that you wish you could bring back?
JM: Contouring! I love a woman who can carry a full face.
TEMPTU: What does a typical work day with Rachel Zoe look like?
JM: We start off chatting over coffee (me) and Tea (her) for 20 mins about what the day in-tales, which will revolve around what look we’ll do. She showers while I set up and in 30 mins (and a lot of laughs) her hair and makeup is finished. Then we discuss wardrobe, accessories, shoes and bags and she’s out the door.
TEMPTU: What was one of your favorite looks (hair and makeup) that you created for Rachel and when and where did she wear it?
JM: For the 2009 Met Ball Gala she wore a yellow Marc Jacobs dress. I just love how effortless she looked.
TEMPTU: What is one of your favorite hobbies that most fans would be surprised to learn?
JM: I love to cook!
TEMPTU: What words do you live by?
JM: Trust your first instinct.
TEMPTU: What is your favorite quote?
JM: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” -Nelson Mandela
