Her talents have taken her around the world and back. In an exclusive interview, we get back to her roots to find out what inspired it all.
How did you get started as a makeup artist?
I did theater makeup in both high school and college as a side passion while studying art.
When was your big break in the industry?
It all has been a complete gradual journey. I don’t recall an actual “big break” per say…just increasingly bigger opportunities based on my commitment and passion.
I believe my husband bought me my first airbrush machine and makeup for my birthday in 2003, and then it was off to the races!
What do you love most about TEMPTU products?
I love the versatility available for artists, the quality of pro product, the longevity in the industry and the development of new innovative ideas in equipment and makeup based on what the industry calls for.
Any pro tips on airbrushing?
Patience! And the word “layering” should be marked on your brain in order to achieve optimum results.
What was your career defining moment thus far?
Again, I’ve had numerous brilliant opportunities so to pick out just one does not define the journey that got me here. If had to name a few:
1. Presenting at The Makeup Show from its opening year has [allowed] me to create amazing relationships with colleagues and become a household name when it comes to airbrush beauty and body art.
2. Being able to work and manage huge events like Marc Jacobs Holiday Events and Fashion Week really made me realize my abilities in leadership.
3. I guess I could say when I worked on Lady Gaga for her Born This Way video, but I felt I would not have gotten that job if my career was not already at a place where people knew and trusted my talent and work ethic.
Through fine and contemporary art, contemporary fashion, historical/period looks and fashion, people’s authentic energy and moods and [challenging myself] to make the socially viewed unattractive beautiful.
What are the top 5 TEMPTU products that are always in your kit?
What is your most important makeup tool?
My airbrush gun!
Are there any future projects coming up that you are excited about?
I am in constant development of my Internship/MUA Leadership Program. What I know and what I have experienced is not meant for me to hold on for myself. If I can make a difference for someone who is daring enough to take the leap into this overwhelming career, I feel I have fully utilized the gifts that I have been blessed with.
If you were stranded on an island and you could only bring 3 items with you…what could you not live without?
Food, water and music.
Alexander McQueen, Thierry Muglar, Jaques Fath and John Galliano.
Which product are you always giving away or are people taking from your kit?
Extra ¼ oz. TEMPTU bottles and my brushes.
What do you see as the next hot trend?
I don’t really follow “trends,” I follow what makes people feel good, (that may be blasphemous as a makeup artist) but what I do find interesting are looks that speak to people’s ideas and essence. If it happens to follow a trend, awesome, but it was probably an accident.
