Our top 5 Self-Tanning Tips

As the weather slowly gets warmer we begin to get into a tan state of mind. Thanks to modern beauty innovations we no longer have to wait for summer to get our glow on. Self-tanners may prevent us from any preminate skin problems, but if not applied correctly you can end up with uneven color and blotches. Yikes! Having done a lot of self-tanning research while developing our Summer Skin Kit, we’ve come up with our top 5 Self-Tanning tips to get you a goof-proof glow.

1. Scrub, Rub, Tan – After towel-drying, prep your knees, elbows, ankles, and knuckles with an oil-free body moisturizer. Parts of your body that don’t have many oil glands tend to be dry and will grab most of the color when tanning. By exfoliating and moisturizing these key areas you’ll avoid orange elbows and ankles.

2. Work your way up – With any self-tanner, it’s best to start applying on the lowest body part of your body and work up. For many of us the first place we start is our stomach and chest, but bending over to do your legs and feet creates creases. Skip the whiskered tummy tan altogether by applying your tan feet first!

3. Take a break – You don’t want to wipe away the tanner before it has a chance to react with your skin. To fully develop your tan you’ll need to wait a minimum of 15 minutes before getting dressed. Yes, even if your skin doesn’t feel sticky. You can speed up the drying process by sitting in front of a cool fan (a nice treat in the warmer weather). For even quicker results, use spray tan instead of a cream or a lotion. Sprays absorb faster because they have smaller color molecules.

4. Blend to Mend – Three to five minutes after you’ve applied your tanner, use a dry washcloth to gently blend the color around your wrists, ankles, and feet and between your fingers. Doing this right after you apply your tanner prevents you from having any dark and obvious splotchy areas.

5. Make it last – Too much water will wash off your glow. Cut down your cleaning routine to no more then 10 minutes, and keep the water temperature warm, not hot. Don’t shave as often, and skip exfoliating until you’re ready to reapply self-tanner. The best solution is to shower, shave, and exfoliate right before you tan.
